A transformation is a metamorphosis: a dramatic change. Not the kind of change that happens incrementally, in small steps, but fundamentally, a change from one thing into something different, like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.

For example, when you bake a cake, it starts as liquid batter, and when you bake it in the oven, it becomes a light and fluffy cake.

Disruptive technologies like the web and social media can transform markets dramatically. For example, the most profitable revenue stream for newspapers used to be the classified ads section. Now that activity — buying and selling items, making romantic connections, finding jobs or hiring employees — have all moved to apps and online platforms.

Technology is always advancing, and there is always a transformation happening or on the horizon. You may also be going through a personal transformation, or thinking about one. Or it might be time to transform your company or work life.

What transformations do you see around you or feel inside you? How might they change things? How can you prepare for the transition?
