Measurement

Einstein famously said “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.”

Numbers aren’t everything, but numbers and math are critically important in business, science and life, especially if you want to track progress against others, or over time.

Some things, like money, time, temperature, and distance, have clear quantitative values, making them easier to count. Other things, like the quality of a product or service, happiness, satisfaction, depression, pain, are much harder to measure.

Nevertheless you can use numbers to measure such intangibles by asking people to rate them on a scale. For example, the number of stars you might give when rating a restaurant or product.

By finding a way to measure the things that matter to you, you can gain more insight into how you are doing relative to others or over time.

What matters most to you right now? How might you measure it? Can you track progress over time?
