Infinite loop

Life repeats itself in patterns and cycles. Sometimes you find yourself in a pattern that oscillates between two different states.

For example, when things are crazy and chaotic, you crave order, so you impose more structure on your activities. But over time the structure becomes stifling and you feel trapped, so you loosen the constraints to create more freedom. Over time, too much freedom leads to chaos, and you find yourself looping back to order again.

Another example from nature: Wolves feast on the deer population until there are too many wolves and not enough deer. Many of the wolves starve to death. With fewer wolves around, the deer population surges. With more deer to feed on, the wolf population multiplies, until once again there are too many wolves and not enough deer, and the cycle starts again.

Are you stuck in an infinite loop, oscillating between two extremes, when what you really want is the happy medium?

Can you improve your understanding of the oscillating pattern by diagramming it out? Can you design a more measured, managed approach that helps you escape the infinite loop?
