Sailboats, like airplanes and other vehicles, are simple machines designed to get us from here to there. A sailboat uses the natural power of wind and water to make it go.
A sailboat can be a wonderful metaphor for thinking about a business venture or project. When sailing, you rely on wind and weather, and your skills in using them to your advantage. The sun and stars, compass, and nautical charts guide you on your way. A rudder and keel helps you stay upright and on course. The weather can change without warning. Dangers can lurk under the water.
Where is your sailboat going? What is your North Star that guides your decision-making? What is the wind that drives you forward? What are the weather patterns you should be prepared for? What should you be looking for as you scan the horizon? What might lurk under the surface?
