A message in a bottle is cast upon a vast and endless sea for an unknown future reader. The sender does not know who will receive it, or when, or whether it will ever be received at all.
The message in the bottle can be one of hope or despair. Hope of being rescued, or a final message from someone who believes they are doomed.
When the sender seals the message and throws it out to sea, they let go of control. The bottle may be swallowed by a whale, break upon rocks, drift for decades or centuries. It may be forever lost or it may be found.
